MARC BROSNAN'S RESPONSE TO DAN O'NEIL'S FEATURE ON THE VULCAN

It is with sad disappointment that I read Dan O'Neill's feature (Echo, 1/9/10) Last orders for the traditional pub. At the beginning he refers to the Vulcan in Adam Street as a 'relic' and suggests it is not worthy of saving. Dan does this by comparing the Vulcan to the list of public houses that have had to close due to economic reasons. Those of us who are trying to save the Vulcan are doing so because it is threatened with demolition not simply closure.

This little pub is all that is left of what was once a thriving community, a community destroyed in the 1960's at the behest of the then 'City Fathers'. I grew up in that community and all I have left when I return is the Vulcan as a reminder of where I once lived. I would expect Dan to fully support this hostelry and recognise its links to the City's past. This is the area where Cardiff grew out from to become the major coal exporting capitol of the world. I don't believe any of the pubs recently listed in the Echo's features have anything like the historic ties that the Vulcan has. To pull it down would be the last nail in the coffin of a lost community and an insult to those us who were born and brought up there.

If Dan O'Neill cannot see this then I don't think he should retain the moniker 'Kairdiff Kid'. Any real Kairdiffian, particularly those with Irish roots would stand full square behind saving this link with Cardiff's illustrious past.
