Note: Census recorded dates of birth vary.

MARRIAGE

Peter O’Shea (my grandfather) married Mary Crowley (grandmother) on 19 May 1900. A witness to their wedding was a Mary Ellen Doubler whom I believe was Mary’s half sister.

At the time of their wedding Peter was living in 37 Nora Street and Mary in 49 Nora Street

FAMILY

It is believed that the family moved from 22 North William Street to 8 Pendoylan Street just after the 1901 census. They later moved to 9 Pendoylan Street. This street was demolished in July 1967.

They had seven children who were baptized in St Pauls, and one child who was baptized in St. Davids. It is understood that a further child “Patrick” died at birth.

Peter O’Shea baptized 9.3.01

Charles (my father) 22.6.02 – son Tim

Mary 11.5.04

Honora 21.2.06

Thomas 12.1.08 – daughter Maureen

Daniel 1.10.09 – daughter Judith

Henry 28.6.11 – son Peter

John 11.5.13

They also had another son Timothy whose baptismal record I cannot find. Timothy was a merchant seaman during the 2nd world war and his ship the SS Otterpool out of Hull was sunk by the U-Boat U30 in Convoy HGF-34 on 20.6.1940. On 3 September 1939 this U-Boat U30 sank the first ship in the second world war when she sank the passenger ship Athenia by mistake (taking her to be an Armed Merchant Cruiser.

The CROWLEY line

Nate: dates are approximate and frequently vary.

MARRIAGE

Peter O’Shea (my grandfather) age 23 married Mary Crowley, (grandmother) age 22 (born c. 1878) on 19 May 1900

At the time of their wedding Peter was living in 37 Nora Street and Mary in 49 Nora Street.

At birth, Mary retained her mothers maiden and it is probable that she was illegitimate.

Although her marriage certificate records her father as Charles Crowley (deceased) her birth certificate (d.o.b. 19.4.1877) gives no fathers name and her baptism on 19 April 1877 is recorded in the ”St. Davids Unknown Surnames Index” as Mary Anne with Ellen Crowley recorded as her mother.

Ellen Crowley (d.o.b c.1861) was 17 when Mary was born and she married John Doubler in March 1881.

CENSUS

At the time of the 1891 census Ellen was living at 49 Nora Street with the Doubler family with seven of her children (half brothers/sisters to Mary??)

Residents

John Doubler a General Labourer age 30 born in Ireland c1851

Ellen Doubler (nee Crowley - g.gm) was 23 born in Ireland c.1878)

Mary Ellen Doubler*** age 9 months

Charles Doubler son age 9?

Thomas Doubler son age7?

Elizabeth Doubler age 4

John Doubler age 4

William Doubler age 1

Michael Doubler age 1

Patrick Hayes age 26

Julia Hayes age24

Mary E. Crowley daughter age 5

Julia Hayes age 1

Mary E. Crowley is also listed as a resident but her name is given between that of another family called the Hayes and her age is given as 5. It is considered more than probable that this Mary E. Crowley is my grandmother Mary living with her Auntie Julia Hayes (O’Shea) at 49 Nora Street from where she was married. A witness on her marriage certificate is that of Mary Ellen Doubler ***(her half sister) who lived at the same address. NOTE – Although I am of the firm opinion that my grandmother was illegitimate I now doubt whether she is this Mary E. Crowley owing to the difference in the dates.

Ellen Crowley’s father was called Charles (g.g.gf) and at the time of the 1861 census they were living at Charles father-in-law house at 27 Tyndall Street

CENSUS
